An ardent devotee of the Greek countryside proposes some tried and trusted trails for the country’s alternative travellers.
Having the Idyli traditional guest house as your base, discover the picturesque village and its beach, visit the exhibition and cultural centre at Charoupomylos, the archaeological site of Ancient Eleftherna, the springs at Argyroupoli and buy some traditional ceramics in the village of Margarites. At Peza, savour authentic Greek cuisine at the restaurant Onisimos. Wander through the Old Town of Rethymno and eat local delicacies at the Prima Plora restaurant.
2) Lake Kerkini, Central Macedonia
Hike to the lake from the Limneo guest house, try a sweet made with buffalo milk and taste the local wine. You can also enjoy a steam bath in the border village of Agistro, fresh trout from the fish farm, as well as pure honey from a local apiary. See the Byzantine fortress at Sidirokastro, the fort of Roupel, the cave of Alistrati, go horse riding around the lake and grill fish with local fishermen. Walk through the Aggitis canyon and barbecue local meat beside the river of the same name.
3) Tzoumerka, Epirus
Make your way along the path between the UNESCO protected villages of Kalarytes and Syrrako, take a breather at the Kipinas monastery, go
rafting in the Arachthos canyon, marvel at the Plaka bridge, become acquainted with the local plants and herbs and learn about traditional net fishing techniques.
4) Kryoneri, Corinthia
After breakfast at Hostel Elisson, discover the beauty of Mt. Vesiza and the Byzantine monastery of Lechova, swim in the sea at Kiato or head for
Stymfalia lake to see the acropolis of Titan and the Environmental Museum. Indulge your palate at the local cheese dairy. Have a picnic and cycle in the Mougostos oak forest, observe the stars in the Astronomical Park.
